At Inter BEE 2025, happening in Tokyo, Libec unveiled the TH-650X, its first tripod featuring an Arca-Swiss plate. The complete travel kit weighs just 2.7kg with a 3kg payload capacity, has a stepless variable friction fluid-head, and a tilt range of +90° to -80°. Japanese retail pricing is set at ¥26,500 (approximately $175-180 USD), with global availability expected in late January or early February 2026.
The new system represents Libec’s entry into the Arca-Swiss ecosystem, responding to growing demand for compact video solutions with the popular quick-release standard. The head accepts standard Arca-Swiss compatible plates with ±30mm of lateral adjustment for precise camera positioning. According to Koichi-san from Libec, the decision to develop an Arca-Swiss compatible head came from consistent market requests for a lightweight travel tripod that could accommodate the widely-adopted plate system.
Unlike simple adaptations of existing products, Libec designed this head completely from scratch. The company invested significant development time to achieve smooth fluid movement while maintaining both compact dimensions and low weight. This ground-up approach allowed engineers to optimize the mechanism specifically for travel applications without compromising the fluid damping performance Libec is known for.
The TH-650X offers a tilt range of +90° to -80°. Operating temperature tolerance runs from -20°C to +60°C, covering most professional shooting environments from cold weather exteriors to warm studio conditions.
The tripod head offers two mounting configurations to maximize compatibility across different workflows. Users can attach the head via the included 65mm bowl clamp, making it compatible with any standard 65mm bowl tripod system. Alternatively, the “dual head” design allows direct mounting to flat bases using a 3/8-inch screw thread.
This versatility extends the kit’s usefulness beyond the included legs. Cinematographers who already own compatible tripods can integrate the Arca-Swiss head into their existing setups, while those purchasing the complete kit gain future flexibility if they later acquire additional support systems.
The standout mechanical innovation is the combined lock and stepless variable friction adjustment system. Each pan and tilt knob serves dual purposes: light rotation adjusts friction levels continuously across the full range for controlled movement, while fully tightening the knob engages a positive lock. This eliminates the need for separate friction and lock controls, simplifying the head’s profile while maintaining full operational capability.
Libec expressed particular pride in the smoothness of the friction system despite the head’s compact size. We tested the fluid drag during the interview and can confirm the movement feels refined, with none of the stiction or inconsistency sometimes found in budget tripod heads.
The tripod legs incorporate several practical features often relegated to accessories on competing systems. Three-stage leg sections provide a height range from 71cm to 155.5cm (approximately 28 inches to 61 inches), balancing compact collapsed size for transport with adequate working height for most shooting situations.
A carrying handle comes standard with the kit rather than as an optional extra, and users can remove it when not needed. The legs include threaded mounting points on three sides, providing convenient attachment locations for monitor arms, recorders, or other accessories without requiring additional clamps.
The complete package includes everything needed for immediate deployment: the Arca-Swiss fluid head, tripod legs, 65mm bowl clamp for bowl mounting, and the carrying handle. This bundled approach eliminates the need to source additional components before the system becomes functional.
At ¥26,500 in Japan (approximately $175-180 USD), Libec is aggressively pricing the TH-650X to compete directly with Chinese manufacturers who have dominated the budget Arca-Swiss travel tripod segment. The 2.7kg total weight positions it firmly in the travel category, light enough for extended carry while providing sufficient stability for mirrorless cameras, DSLRs with moderate rigs, and similar setups within the 3kg payload limit.
Initially, Libec plans to sell the head and legs as a complete kit. However, the company indicated willingness to offer the head separately if market demand materializes. This would allow users who already own suitable legs to add Arca-Swiss compatibility without purchasing redundant components.
Global availability is planned from late January to early February 2026.
