Disney has become the first major content licensing partner for OpenAI’s Sora platform in a three-year agreement that will allow users to generate short videos featuring over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars properties. The deal includes a $1 billion equity investment from Disney and will see the company deploy OpenAI’s technology across Disney+ and other products, with character-based content expected to launch in early 2026.
The partnership represents a significant shift in how major entertainment companies approach generative AI technology. Under the agreement, Sora will enable users to create short, prompted social videos that can be viewed and shared, drawing from an extensive library of animated, masked, and creature characters, along with costumes, props, vehicles, and iconic environments from Disney’s portfolio. ChatGPT Images will also gain access to the same intellectual property, though the agreement explicitly excludes any talent likenesses or voice
The character library spans Disney’s most recognizable properties, including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Lilo, Stitch, Ariel, Belle, Beast, Cinderella, Baymax, Simba, and Mufasa. Fans will also have access to characters from Encanto, Frozen, Inside Out, Moana, Monsters Inc., Toy Story, Up, and Zootopia.
Marvel characters covered in the agreement include Black Panther, Captain America, Deadpool, Groot, Iron Man, Loki, Thor, and Thanos. The Star Wars universe contributes Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia, the Mandalorian, Stormtroopers, and Yoda, among others.
Disney+ will host curated selections of Sora-generated videos created by fans, providing a platform for user-generated content within Disney’s official streaming ecosystem. OpenAI and Disney plan to collaborate on utilizing OpenAI’s models to power new experiences for Disney+ subscribers, creating additional touchpoints between audiences and Disney’s storytelling properties.
Beyond the licensing arrangement, Disney will become a major customer of OpenAI, deploying the company’s APIs to build new products, tools, and experiences across Disney+. The entertainment giant will also implement ChatGPT for internal employee use, extending OpenAI’s technology into Disney’s corporate operations.
The financial commitment includes a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI, with Disney receiving warrants to purchase additional equity. The transaction remains subject to negotiation of definitive agreements, required corporate and board approvals, and customary closing conditions.
Both companies have emphasized their shared commitment to responsible AI use. OpenAI has committed to continuing its implementation of trust and safety measures, including age-appropriate policies and controls across the service. The partnership includes provisions to prevent the generation of illegal or harmful content, respect content owner rights in relation to model outputs, and protect individuals’ rights regarding voice and likeness usage.
Disney CEO Robert A. Iger positioned the partnership within the broader context of technological evolution in entertainment. “Technological innovation has continually shaped the evolution of entertainment, bringing with it new ways to create and share great stories with the world,” Iger stated. “The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence marks an important moment for our industry, and through this collaboration with OpenAI, we will thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI, while respecting and protecting creators and their works.”
OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman emphasized Disney’s storytelling legacy in his statement. “Disney is the global gold standard for storytelling, and we’re excited to partner to allow Sora and ChatGPT Images to expand the way people create and experience great content,” Altman said. “This agreement shows how AI companies and creative leaders can work together responsibly to promote innovation that benefits society, respect the importance of creativity, and help works reach vast new audiences.”
Sora and ChatGPT Images are expected to begin generating fan-inspired videos with Disney’s multi-brand licensed characters in early 2026. The three-year agreement provides a framework for ongoing collaboration between the two companies as generative AI technology continues to evolve.
